For many black women, being able to wear their natural hair is a symbol of pride, acceptance and immense love for their natural beauty. Every wave, kink and coil is a true representation of who we are and an appreciation of our heritage. For decades black people were taught to suppress the nature of their hair because it was deemed wild and unkempt. But as more men and women of colour begin to embrace themselves and remove the shackles of mental slavery, so shall we see the rise of the ‘fro’.
In the 1960s, people of colour finally said, “To hell with that!” After years of subjecting ourselves to European beauty standards, we decided to take back our hair. This newfound self-acceptance was widely known as the Black Is Beautiful movement, which sprang from the Black Power movement.
Since the 1970’s the afro waned and made way for other natural hairstyles such as cornrows, twists and braids which dominated majority of the 2000s. However, in 2017, the afro made a killer comeback with the Natural Hair Movement. Many of us watched teary-eyed on our TV screen as Sanaa Lathan shaved her entire head in the Netflix Original movie “Nappily Ever After”. If you haven’t seen this as yet pause right now and add it to your watch list, you can thank me later.
